Congress Theme – Shared wisdom in an age of change

Never has the discipline of landscape architecture been more relevant than in this age of momentous global change, where current approaches to management of our landscape can no longer be sustained.

IFLA50; shared wisdom in an age of change’ provides a framework within which to consider our changing landscape through multiple dimensions of wisdom. Whether exploring ancient wisdom, reaching across realms of contemporary knowledge, or imagining a more resilient future, shared wisdom strengthens our ability to effect positive change.
Abstract Submissions may be made under the following themes:

    Contemporary issues around globalisation
    Indigenous wisdom
    Local landscape
    Radical change and resilience
    Rural landscapes
    Urban landscapes

For information about submission guidelines and to submit your abstract please visit the Call for Abstracts page on the IFLA 2013 website.

Registration for the Congress will be opening on May 22nd and full details of how to register and book your accommodation for the Congress will be emailed to you.

About the IFLA 50 theme

Maori Flax Flower The sculptural spiral form of the Maori flax flower or putiputi is the key inspiration for the dynamic “flower” used in the logo for the IFLA 50 congress.

This form communicates with fresh vitality the theme of the 50th congress which will be “shared wisdom”. The congress is a celebration of international landscape architecture, and a milestone event.

As a bi-cultural nation, Aotearoa New Zealand is well placed to host the congress. The event will succeed through celebrating the shared wisdom of our unique polynesian culture and the diversity of our natural environment.

The making of putiputi from a single blade of flax (harakeke) is taught as part of sharing the wisdom of respect and care for our natural environment. Harkeke has a multitude of uses, from slowing nitrate leaching on farms, to medicine (rongoa), to Maori weaving and art making, and fine linen fabric (muka). Flax is a cornerstone of our native ecology, a key wetland species and source of nectar for our native birds.

The Basket(s) of Knowledge

Ko te Kete Tuauri, Ko te Kete Tuatea, Ko te KeteAronui – The 3 knowledge baskets, The coming of the knowledge.
Nau te rourou naku te rourou – Your basket and my basket.
Naku te rourou nau te rourou ka ora ai te iwi – With your basket and my basket the people will live.

The IFLA 50 logo design celebrates and references weaving; of the basket/s of knowledge and as a symbol of the value of our relationship with the native world. It also contains the repeated dynamic spiral, connected to the harmonic geometry of the golden mean.

To reinforce these meanings, and to anchor our brand in Aotearoa New Zealand, we have incorporated rich and bright photography of harakeke textures, details and growth cycles; and of other native flora.
